Toms River man found with a loaded gun and a 500-pound pig

A Toms River man is facing a serious of charges after police found a loaded shotgun in his car at the police station along with several weapons at his house as well as a 500-pound pig.

Police arrested Joseph Kelly around 7:00 am Monday morning in the parking lot of the Toms River Police Department.

Kelly had told police that he may have a warrant for his arrest.

An investigation led police to the discovery of a loaded shotgun which they said served no legitimate purpose in Kelly’s vehicle.

Kelly was charged and later transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.

Based upon statements Kelly made during detention, his residence on Egret Drive was checked for the safety of any additional occupants.

The residence was found to be vacant, however additional weapons and ammunition were located inside the home.

Due to the unknown age and condition of some of the located munitions, the New Jersey State Police Bomb Unit responded and assisted in their removal as a precautionary measure.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office also assisted in the investigation.

Animal Control then removed a 500-lb pig from the residence for safe keeping.

Police say that at no time were threats made to the public.

This is a continuing investigation and additional charges are pending.
