Beach tag sales in southern Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties last year brought in more than $12.2 million, and officials expect a similar amount this year.

This summer, beach-goers in certain towns will be able to leave their cash in the car and buy beach badges with their smartphone. Manasquan, Seaside Heights, Sea Isle City, Longport and Ventnor are the first Jersey towns offering beach badge sales through the mobile app Viply.

Right now the app won't fully replace the badge system - once a customer matches their app to the beach badge inspector’s, they will be given physical tags and will have to show them on future visits.
