Point Pleasant PD Shuts Down ‘Mailbox Library’
Have you seen the 'miniature libraries' that have begun to pop up in various places? Rather than a formal library run by the township, these are more of a grassroots version, where people can pick up or drop off a book whenever they want.
There are seven of these "little libraries" within 10 miles of the Hawk's Nest, including one right down the road near the post office on Water Street. You can find one near you with this map.
When a family in Point Pleasant Borough set up a mailbox library on their property, they hoped it would be a positive thing to bring to the neighborhood - but one neighbor had a stick up their butt.
Peter and Grace Hagemeyer said the PPPD came to their house the same day they put the library up, and the next day they were contacted by Borough Code Enforcement officers and gave them ten days to remove the library.
Peter & Grace Hagemeyer were told that “because libraries are not explicitly mentioned in the land-use ordinance, they're not allowed”.
