
Here’s What New Jersey Needs To Know About The Deadly Listeria Outbreak
Going to the deli in Jersey is kind of like second nature; you go to pick up subs, deli pickles, cold salads, and of course your lunch meat for the week.
I've always been a big cold-cuts guy smoked turkey and cheese have been a staple for lunch for years, however, due to a new listeria outbreak, deli meats may have to be taken off the menu.

What Is Listeria, And Who Is It Dangerous To?
According to the Mayo Clinic, listeria can be a serious and sometimes deadly foodborne bacteria that can be very serious for those over 65, women who are pregnant, and those with weekend immune systems.
More often than not, listeria is caused by eating deli meats that weren't properly processed and by drinking milk that wasn't correctly pasteurized.

According to the Bergen Times, a new listeria outbreak linked to tainted deli meats has been reported in 12 states, with two reported deaths.
One of those deaths was reported here in the Garden State.
Unfortunately, there's no real pinpointing the exact types of deli meats that are causing the listeria outbreak, but some common meats that are known to cause listeria are liverwurst, and ham.
How Does Listeria Spread?
In deli's, listeria is able to spread through cross-contamination whether it be through deli slicers, kitchen counters, or through human contact.
It's also a tough disease because it can survive colder temperatures often found in deli's.
How To Protect Yourself From The Deli Counter Listeria Outbreak
Fortunately, if you're in good health listeria is fairly harmless, but if you do fall into the risk group of individuals over the age of 65, pregnant women, or folks who have a compromised immune system there are a few ways to protect yourself.

According to the Inquirer, you can avoid deli meat until the listeria outbreak is through.
You could also heat your deli meats to a temperature of 165 degrees which would kill the bacteria and make a nice panini.
