Earth Day is credited to U.S. Senator and Governor Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin.

When he observed the devastation of the 1969 Santa Barbara, California oil spill, he created an "environmental teach-in", held on April 22, 1970, which became Earth Day.

Now the date is celebrated throughout the world.

Here's what's happening in our part of it:

ShopRite of Fischer Bay in Toms River is offering a program today from 2pm to 4pm to help you learn how to start your own vegetable garden.

The Ocean County Library (Long Beach Island branch) will celebrate the day tomorrow at 3:30 pm and feature a children's puppet show from Alliance for a Living Ocean. The event is for kids of all ages with some crafts at the end of the program.
