Elderly Man, Mistaken For Seal, Saved From Blizzard [Video]
Gerald Whitman, of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, is a lucky man.
While on his way to his dialysis appointment on Monday, the 73-year-old had to take a detour because the road was blocked by snow during a blizzard.
He thought he knew where he was going, but quickly realized he was in trouble when his car got stuck after driving off the road, CBC News reported.
He got out of his car and started walking to a house he saw in the distance, but didn't make it. After about an hour, Whitman told CBC News he just gave up because the snow was too deep and he was exhausted. He even said that he "made peace with the Lord." He was prepared to die.
Luckily for Whitman, that wasn't the case.
A retiree, Charlie Parker, was outside shoveling the snow in his driveway when he looked down the road and saw what he thought to be a seal. A seal!
He walked down the road to investigate and found Whitman face down in the snow. After a struggle, Parker managed to get Whitman back to his home, but his condition wasn't good.
Parker called for an ambulance, but it took 45 minutes to arrive because the roads weren't cleared. So, he warmed Whitman with blankets and spoon-fed him coffee until the paramedics arrived.
Whitman is now doing well, received his dialysis treatment and is extremely grateful Parker was in the right place at the right time.
