It was the middle of the night when the single-car crash occurred in the early hours of Monday morning.

Berkeley Police said they responded around 1:45 am to Hickory Lane and Route 9 and once on scene learned that the driver, 20-year old Leaa Mayer of Whiting, was heading northbound when she struck a utility pole at the corner of Route 9 and Buckley Lane.

The impact of the crash caused the utility pole to severe from its base and fall down onto Buckley Lane as well as causing a power surge which led to three traffic lights on Route 9, near the intersections of Korman, Iger and Station, to shut down.

The roadway in this stretch of Route 9 was then closed and detours set up in both directions for a period of time.

Mayer, who was injured in the crash, was then arrested and charged with DWI, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain lane and failure to produce a required document (insurance card.)

She was later released.
