I have a strange affinity for old-timey New York. I love movies like "Gangs of New York", I loved the show "The Knick"...so when I came across this video of restored footage from over 100 years ago, I had to share it.

So, here's what that video's description said:

  • Restored with neural networks 1911 New York footage taken by the Swedish company Svenska Biografteatern on a trip to America
  • FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
  • Image resolution boosted up to 4k
  • Resorted video sharpness
  • Colorized – I'm still unsure about this, but regarding to high request from the subscribers decided to test DeOldify NN on this video
  • Please, be aware that colorization colors are not real and fake, colorization made only for the ambiance and do not represent real historical data

I will admit I don't understand most of that. I don't get how you can boost the frame rate of old footage; I don't get how you can colorize via neural networks; I have a vague understand of what a neural network even is, but not nearly enough to get how it would create footage like that. Regardless, it looks amazing!

If you jump to 7:44 in the video, you can see the comparison of the old footage and the restored, and it's crazy.
