The New Jersey DEP says that if you ever get bitten by a snake, do not try to draw out any venom, do not apply ice to the wound, and do not apply a tight bandage.
What you should do is wash the wound out with soap and water and start seeking medical attention.

If you don't plan on spending much time at the beach this summer, because you're more of a lake person, you'll want to make note that there are several lakes in Jersey that are hotbeds for these slithery reptiles.
Merrill Creek Reservoir, Warren County, NJ

According to North Jersey, Merrill Creek Reservoir is home to the spotted water snake.
You could also see milk snakes and rough green snakes.
The Manasquan Reservoir, Monmouth County
This is another hot spot for the northern water snake.
And since this is one of Jersey's most popular lakes for visitors, snake sightings are widely reported.
Parvin Lake, Salem County
You could run into ribbon snakes, garter snakes, and the northern water snake while enjoying a day at this popular New Jersey Lake.
Lake Hopatcong, Morris, And Sussex County

Fun fact: Lake Hoptacong is Jersey's largest manmade lake, and it's home to a variety of Northern Water Snakes.
You could see Woodport and Great Cove Snakes, and according to North Jersey, at one point, someone reported seeing a 16-foot Green Anaconda!
Mullica River, Atlantic, And Bergen County
Due to its location, running through large parts of the Pine Barrens, the Mullica River is home to some wild snake species.
You could see corn snakes, black racers, king snakes, ribbon snakes, and much more.
