Unless you're one of thousands of New Jersey residents who were part of a massive purge of medical debt in the Garden State.

NJ Eliminates $100 Million In Medical Debt

I'm fortunate enough to have never needed anything major in the medical department that could lead to medical debt.

That doesn't mean I don't understand what debt feels like, between student loans and a mortgage my wife and I can feel the squeeze some months.

However, thanks to the charitable organization Undue Medical Debt and Gov Phil Murphy's use of extra COVID-19 emergency funds, Jersey just eliminated $100 Million in medical debt for thousands of Jersey residents, according to NJ.com.

In total, almost 18,000 residents received the relief, eliminating a total of $61 Million in medical debt to Prime Healthcare hospitals, and another 31,700 residents received relief totaling $38.4 Million eliminating debt to other medical providers.

Who Qualified For New Jersey's Medical Relief Program?

People who qualified for this relief were in desperate need of it.

Residents who were 4 times below the NJ poverty line were qualified and so were people whose medical debt totaled at least 5% of their annual income.

Residents who qualify don't need to apply, the Murphy Administration said those who qualified began getting notified earlier this week.

To those who qualify, this is going to be a huge burden lifted off their shoulders.

And if you do need to go to the hospital, Jersey's a good place to be.
