An elderly man from Middletown Township who had wandered away from his home is now safe and sound thanks to the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office Project Lifesaver Program.

A joint investigation began last night by Middletown Police and the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office after they learned that a 69-year old man, a participant on the program, had wandered away from his home.

Through the Project Lifesaver's hand held tracking device, which emits radio signals, the man was found in Middletown within 90 minutes of it being activated.

"This incident reinforces the significance of the Project Lifesaver Program and what a critical tool it is when locating a missing individual," Sheriff Shaun Golden said. "I commend the officers involved for their quick and decisive actions, and, proud to lead the way when assisting individuals with Alzheimer's Disease and Autism through this valuable program,"

S/O Kurt Kroeper, S/O Ralph Irizzary, Det. Al Scott and Sgt. CJ Higgins of the Middletown PD conducted the search.

The program, which started in 2003, has led to ten rescues in Monmouth County of individuals who have wandered off.

Each radio transmitter worn by an individual has a unique frequency.

Should that client become missing, as was the case on Thursday, the sheriff's office has ten receivers with which to track the missing individual.

The range for the radio receiver is one mile on the ground, one quarter mile when roof mounted and five to seven miles in a helicopter.

There are currently 168 individuals on the Project Lifesaver program, with 119 juveniles and 49 adults in Monmouth County.
