A Lakehurst man is facing nearly half-a-dozen charges --  most of which were added on after police pulled him over for erratic driving -- after he allegedly assaulted a police officer.

There were several calls that came into dispatch from concerned citizens on Monday night, around 8:53 pm, police said, that relayed the message about a driver who was moving about erratically along Route 70.

Borough police officers then went out to check on the vehicle and saw him commit several motor vehicle violations leading to a motor vehicle stop near Elm Street and Hibernia Avenue.

An officer asked Vince Aiello, 41, of Lakehurst to step out of the vehicle as part of the ongoing investigation.

Aiello then seemingly out of nowhere punched an officer in the face while getting out of the vehicle and doubled down on resisting arrest as police said he became uncooperative and even tried to get back into his own vehicle.

There was another brief struggle but police were able to eventually place Aiello in handcuffs and bring him back to headquarters for processing.

Before the ride back down the street to police headquarters though, officers found a large machete in the passenger compartment of Aiello's vehicle.

At the police station, Aiello was charged with obstruction, aggravated assault on a Police Officer, resisting arrest, tampering with evidence, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, failure to maintain lane, failure to signal, and delaying traffic.

Police said that he was processed and then released on a summons due to New Jersey's Bail Reform laws.
