Jersey Shore Bridge Won’t Be Open For Memorial Day Weekend
In February we showed you that 16 bridges in Ocean County were considered "structurally deficient". Just about a month ago we told you that the Townsend Inlet Bridge that connects Avalon and Sea Isle City was closed indefinitely. Officials had hoped to allow traffic during the busy Memorial Day weekend, but are now saying the bridge won't be ready for tourists or locals to use.
The work will take longer than expected because of problems driving the support piles into the bottom of the inlet. Crews encountered an obstruction approximately 12 feet below the inlet bottom forcing its removal and the current re-installation.
Cars will have to detour to Route 9 or the Garden State Parkway. Pedestrians, fishermen, and bicyclists can continue to use the bridge, but access will be closed during certain construction operations. The ongoing work will not affect marine traffic.
