Gone are the days when you can just say "fill it up regular" at the pumps in New Jersey, at least if you're getting fuel at a Wawa, that is.

New Jersey is still the only state in the country that doesn't allow you to pump your own gas, and in my opinion, it's a very outdated law, and they should change it.

Just the other day, I had a misunderstanding at a New Jersey gas station about how much fuel I asked for, and ended up getting into an argument with the attendant!

More on that embarrassing moment right here.

Whether you agree that Jersey drivers should be allowed to pump their own gas or not, it is something we are all 100 percent accustomed to doing.

However, when you pull into a Wawa to fuel up, you'll notice that your experience will be different than in years past now that the company is making a huge statewide change.

Wawa Announces NJ Customers Will Have To Prepay For Fuel When They Gas Up

No longer will you be able to pull up to the pump, say "fill it regular," and wait for the pump to click before getting your grand total and paying.

Now, you'll have to say the exact amount you want pumped, prepay for the fuel, and then they'll start pumping.

And that's regardless of whether you're paying with credit or debit as well.

News 12 reports that if you pull up to a pump, ask for $45 regular, but your car only needs $40 worth of gas, that after pumping the attendant will give you $5 change.

When Will Wawa Require Me To Prepay For My Fuel?

Right now, actually.

It appears as though this new rule went into effect on June 2nd.

Why Is Wawa Making Me Prepay For My Fuel Now In NJ?

In a statement, Wawa says that it's to make the fueling experience exactly the same in every state.

But there's a key difference; in other states, you're in control of pumping your fuel, and if you pay cash, you pay the attendant inside the store, and you get your change right away.

I'm afraid that with how busy Wawa gas stations can get in the summer, you could ask for $40 regular, pre-pay that $40, and then your total may only come out to $30, and then the attendant, being overwhelmed, forgets to give you your change.
