Have you ever seen the movie Armageddon, starring Bruce Willis?

It's a movie about a group of oil drillers who are sent into space to try and break up an asteroid big enough to destroy Earth.

It's one of the best movies ever made, and if you haven't seen it you should check it out this weekend.

Over the past couple of weeks, it started to look like the movie Armageddon may actually have become a reality.

Scientists revealed that they discovered a massive asteroid called 2024 YR4 that was considered a near-Earth asteroid.

This means that when it passes by Earth in 2028, it will be within a certain distance that they could observe it, and then when it passes by Earth again in 2032, it will have the potential to collide with our planet.

The difference between the movie Armageddon and the 2024 YR4 asteroid is that 2024 YR4 wouldn't destroy the planet, but it is what scientists call a 'city killer' meaning it would have devastating effects on parts of the Earth if it were to hit us.

Will Asteroid 2024 YR4 Collide With Earth In 2032?

Earlier this week, Patch released an article stating that the odds of this city-killing asteroid has a 3.1 percent chance of impacting the Earth in 2032.

Now, that may not sound like a lot, but 3.1 percent translates to a 1 in 32 chance that the asteroid would hit Earth.

That's a frightening number; personally, I was ready to stop paying taxes, stop going to work, and start just going on vacations from now until 2032.

Scientists are now saying though after a few more weeks of observation that they were able to use high-powered telescopes to determine that asteroid 2024 YR4 now has only a 0.0004 percent chance of hitting Earth in 2032.

No longer is this city-killer asteroid have any potential to strike the Earth in 8 years, so you can take a breath and rest easy.

But this is a good lesson that we are not alone in space; there are possible threats that we need to be ready for.

That being said, looking up at the nighttime sky, especially in Jersey, can be truly jaw-dropping.

Northern Lights Visible Over New Jersey

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are not a common site for most of the United States. Thanks to two solar storms all of New Jersey saw them in the early hours of 10/6 and 10/7.
