It feels like forever since the Pathmark at Laurel Square in Brick closed, but it only happened in 2015. The KMart in that plaza shut down about a year ago too, and has already been replaced by an At Home store.

Despite the quick turnaround of that part of the plaza, the Pathmark section is still sitting empty. Rumors have been going around of another ShopRite location (which wouldn't be bad, because the parking lot of the ShopRite at the corner of 70 and Chambersbridge is literally hell on Earth), maybe a Wegman's or a Trader Joe's or Acme or Foodtown.

Brick Mayor John Ducey shot down all those rumors, saying there are "absolutely no prospects" for the location. Mayor Ducey was speaking with a representative from Brixmor, the corporate owner of Laurel Square, and was actually asked if there were any food stores he wanted them to contact about leasing the space. When he read from a list of potential stores, the rep said there were no prospects.

I've lived in Brick most of my life, so it would be nice to see a new store come into that plaza. KMart suffered a long death, and my wife raved about the new At Home store. Other stores in that plaza have come and gone, and maybe bringing in a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's would class things up, but if there is no interest from any grocery store chains, I'm not sure what else could take up such a large location.

What would you like to see come to Laurel Square?
