I spent many hours as kid on the beach digging, digging, digging. Getting past the first level of sand, down to the damper stuff, certain that if my mom would just let me, I could make it to China, or at least some cool underground tunnel network.

The Long Beach Township Beach Patrol on LBI took to Facebook to warn people of the dangers of this beach pastime.

I've heard the stories about children (or sometimes adults) being trapped by falling sand, but I always dismissed them as apocrypha or urban legends or old wives' tales.

I do think, however, there is a difference between digging holes and attempting to dig a tunnel, which is what is described in the above post. Digging the biggest, widest, deepest hole you possibly can is fun, but I get that trying to actually create a tunnel under loose sand is behavior that shouldn't be allowed.

Will you tell your kids to stop digging at the beach? Will you tell lifeguards if you see someone else's kid do it?
