A Whiting woman needed to be airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center close to 2:30 am Friday morning after her 2001 Chrysler PT Cruise overturned onto the driver's side on State Highway 70 by mile post 43.

58-year-old Theresa Arena was conscious and alert, police say, but her left arm was pinned between the vehicle and roadway.

She was then helped out by members of the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department and airlifted to the hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

The accident occurred while Arena was heading west on Route 70 when she left her travel lane, crossed onto the shoulder of the road and hit a guardrail with the passenger side of her car which the caused it to overturn onto her side.

Police say Arena was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and is currently listed in stable condition.

It's not known why she veered across the road and what led to the accident.

This crash is being investigated by Sergeant Antonio Ellis and Patrolman Michael Anderson of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit.

The road was closed in both directions for several hours while the investigation was being conducted and while the roadway was cleared.

Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Lakehurst Police Department, Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, the New Jersey State Diversion Team, EMTs from Quality Medical Transport and paramedics from MONOC.
