The Hindenburg Disaster always fascinated me. The grainy footage, the horrified voice of the reporter, the fact that it happened in our own backyard, and the fact that one incident basically doomed blimp travel was always interesting to me.

Werner Gustav Doehner was just 8 years old when his family took the trip from Germany to Lakehurst aboard the Hindenburg. His mother managed to toss him from the blimp, but not before he suffered severe burns to his face, arms, and legs. His mother survived, but his father and sister did not.

Doehner's account is incredible to read. He passed away in early November at a hospital in Laconia, New Hampshire, at the age of 90.
