Middletown North 11, Long Branch 0 (5 Innings)

Senior Colin Dowlen struck out 14 of the 16 batters he faced in a five-inning, one-hit shutout and went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI to carry the Lions (1-0, 1-0) to a win over the Green Wave (0-1, 0-1) in the season-opener for both teams.

Junior Ryan Frontera went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored, junior R.J. Kernan was 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI and junior Mike Weinbel finished 1-for-3 with a double a two runs scored for Middletown North.

No. 10 Howell 5, Manalapan 3

Sophomore Braden Walsh smashed a go-ahead, two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning and the Rebels rallied for four runs in their final turn at-bat to stun the Braves on opening day.

Manalapan senior starter Tyler Kane was dominant through six innings, including retiring the first nine batters of the game with eight strikeouts. Senior Devon Smith broke up the perfect start with a leadoff double in the fourth and scored Howell's first run on a wild pitch, cutting the Manalapan lead to 2-1.

Howell quickly loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with none out against Braves senior Aidan Tumbelson, then scored the first run of the inning on a dropped pop-up, with the batter ruled out on an infield fly rule call. Walsh then followed with a shot to the right-center gap to chase home the winning runs and added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by senior Nick Gallo.

Rebels senior starter Dan Furlong closed out the complete-game win on the mound with a one-two-three seventh inning.

Junior Cristian Bernardini drove in each of the first two Manalapan runs, plating the first run with an RBI single in the first and adding an RBI double in the bottom of the third to make it 2-0.

Junior right-hander John Goodes came within two outs of a no-hitter and settled for a one-hit shutout as the Bulldogs won their opener over the Hornets.

Matt Iulo broke up Goodes's no-hit bid with a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning and Goodes came back to strike out the next two batters to end the game.

No. 7 Central 2, Toms River South 0

Senior Cam Leiter pitched a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and two walks and the Golden Eagles (1-0, 1-0) manufactured two runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure a season-opening win over the Indians (0-1, 0-1) and open their renovated Al Leiter Ballpark with a victory.

Sophomore Brayden Lowden and Dom Masino hit consecutive one-out singles in the fifth and sophomore catcher Cristian Soto followed with a walk to load the bases. Toms River South replaced starter Jake Wilber with fellow senior Aidan Folsom and Central broke through on a passed ball to score Lowden.

Senior Shane Sajewicz followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0.

Cam Leiter returned to the mound to strike out the next two hitters in a one-two-three sixth and after a leadoff error in the seventh, the University of Central Florida commit got a groundout and two strikeouts to close out the game on 111 pitches.

Central's defense picked up Leiter in the top of the third inning. Toms River South senior Gavin Migliori was hit by a pitch with two out and stole second base. Junior Mike Erli came through with a single to left, but Central senior leftfielder Billy Sottilaire cut Migliori down at the plate with a strong throw from left.

Junior Declan Sheehan belted a tiebreaking grand slam in the top of the sixth inning and the Mustangs won a slugfest over the Mustangs in a matchup of teams with high aspirations coming off opening-day losses on Friday.

Sheehan's big blast was the second of two grand slams by Brick Memorial, with senior Anthony Martino connecting for the first during the Mustangs' seven-run fourth inning.

Sheehan's grand slam capped a five-run inning for Brick Memorial, which was an answer to a five-run inning for Donovan Catholic in the bottom of the fifth. In the Griffins rally, sophomore Hunter Johnson hit a go-ahead three-run home run to make it 9-8 in favor of Donovan Catholic, which was preceded by a two-run single by junior Gavin Degnan.

Brick Memorial took an 8-3 lead with seven runs in the top of the fourth inning, capped by Martino's grand slam. Sophomore Nico Maribo gave the Mustangs the lead earlier in the fourth with a two-run single that made it 4-3.

Senior Anthony Mursko hit the first home run of the game -- a solo shot to give Donovan Catholic a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Senior Anthony Sirico went 2-for-3 and drove in three to lead the offensive attack and junior James Wortman work 3 1/3 no-hit innings of relief to pace the Patriots (1-1) to a win over the crosstown rival Colonials (1-1).

Junior Ryan Kopf went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, junior Lucas Dixon was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, senior Sean Keegan was 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases, and sophomore Mike Avino added a double and a run scored.

Sophomore Ryan Costello pitched the final three innings to close out the win and also pitched in an RBI single.

Senior Giovanni Sive doubled and scored a run for Freehold Boro and senior Mike Kleschinsky went 1-for-3 with a run in the loss.

Junior A.J. Gracia delivered a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the fourth and pitched the sixth and the seventh to nail down a two-inning save as the Panthers (2-0) picked up a big non-conference win over the Green Wave (0-1).

Senior Charlie Chropuvka added a two-run home run while junior left-hander Marco Mastroianni worked 2 1/3 innings of relief for the win, allowing just one unearned run in the process.
