Central Jersey Group IV

Senior left-hander Nick Gomes ignited a four-run rally in the sixth inning with a one-out triple, then halted a response by the Falcons in the top of the seventh, closing out a win and sending the Rebels to the sectional semifinals on Tuesday.

After Gomes tripled with one out in the sixth, senior Thomas Strauch broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI double and senior Dan Furlong followed with an RBI single to give Howell a 3-1 lead.

With two out, senior Nick Todisco extended the inning with a single to left and senior Jeremiah Wojenski ripped a double inside the third-base bag to chase in the third run of the inning. Sophomore Joe Zito capped the rally with an RBI single through the middle and Monroe managed to strand Wojenski at third to keep the deficit at 5-4.

Monroe was down to its last out in the seventh with runners on second and third and Gomes fielded a ground ball by Michael Ortiz, but threw it past first baseman Braden Walsh to allow two runs to score and Ortiz to advance to second.

Nick Sellari then reached on an infield single and Trevor Wallace singled to right to score Ortiz and move the tying run to second base, but Gomes responded with a strikeout to end the game.

Joey Fanelli and D.J. Juliano combined on a shutout while Tommy Popoff and Carter Williams ignited the offense with a two-run single apiece as the Dragons (25-4) blanked the Rams (14-11) to advance to the sectional semifinals on Tuesday.

 

 

South Jersey Group III

(3) Delsea 4, (11) Lacey 2

Konnor Reilly drove in two runs, including the go-ahead RBI single through the middle in the bottom of the sixth and the the Crusaders (21-5) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to deny the Lions (12-12) a second straight road win and trip to the sectional semifinals.

Lacey scored both its runs in the top of the first, with junior Carson Gudzak driving one of the two with an RBI single. George Starr took over on the mound for Delsea with one out in the first and pitched 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win.

Senior Mike Todaro ended his career with a strong all-around performance. The right-hander pitched a complete game on 110 pitches, allowing three earned runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Todaro also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

 

 

South Jersey Group II

(1) Cedar Creek 1, (9) Point Boro 0

Mike Giordano singled home the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh and the Pirates (18-12) walked off with a win over the Panthers (9-17-1) to advance to the sectional semifinals on Tuesday.

Senior Trey Harpootlian took a shutout into the seventh inning and finished with one earned run allowed on six hits and a two walks while striking out six and throwing 100 pitches.

Harpootlian also went 1-for-3 with a double and junior Connor Cilento was 2-for-3, but the Panthers could not push either player across against winning pitcher Nate Kennedy, who pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks on 78 pitches.

 

 

South Jersey Non-Public A

(6) CBA 3, (3) Red Bank Catholic 1

Junior Hunter Del Guercio clocked a two-run home run in the first inning, junior Luke Roccesano turned in five strong innings and senior Mike Kelly closed out his second save in as many games to lead the Colts to a quarterfinal win over the rival Caseys.

Del Guercio followed up his first-inning home run with a well-struck single in the third inning that led to CBA's third run when a bobble in the outfield allowed junior Harrison Campi to continue around third base and score.

Roccessano put up zeroes over the first four innings, including wiggling out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the second with a strikeout and a groundout and a strikeout with runners on first and third to end the fourth.

RBC finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth, when junior Frank Scrivanic ripped the 10th pitch of his at-bat off Roccesano's foot and beat it out for a two-out RBI single. Roccesano bounced back with a strikeout to once again end the inning with runners on the corners.

Kelly, who pitched out of a second-and-third, none-out jam on Tuesday to secure a 3-2 win for CBA over Paul VI, pitched around a walk for a scoreless sixth inning and allowed the tying runs to reach with one out in the seventh on Friday.

Scrivanic, who has been RBC's hottest hitter over the past three weeks and finished 2-for-4 with a double on Friday, stepped in again with runners on first and second and jumped ahead in the count, 2-1, but Kelly finished him off with back-to-back sliders for a huge strikeout.

Kelly then closed out the win with another strikeout on his breaking ball.

CBA will travel to play No. 2 St. Joseph of Metuchen in Tuesday's sectional semifinal.

Third baseman Matteo Pasculli hit an opposite-field, go-ahead, three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and Dan Afflitto retired three straight batters in the top of the seventh to nail down a rollercoaster win for the Lancers over the Big Blue, ending Pingry's 14-game winning streak.

Pingry strung together a three-run rally in the top of the sixth to break an 8-8 tie and take an 11-8 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. Matt Recco started the Vianney response with a one-out walk, followed by back-to-back singles by Dylan Galamb and winning pitcher Nick Ferraioli to load the bases.

Recco scored on a wild pitch and Afflitto drew St. John Vianney a run closer with a sacrifice fly center. After shortstop Brady Oswick was hit by a pitch to put the go-ahead run on base, Pasculli stepped in an crushed the game-winning home run.

With Pingry's offense on fire as well, the Lancers still had work to do in recording the final three outs. Ferraioli issued a leadoff walk and was lifted in favor of Afflitto, who recorded back-to-back strikeouts and induced a game-ending groundout to Oswick at shortstop.

Pingry pounced for three runs in the top of the first inning, but St. John Vianney came right back with three in the bottom-half on a two-run homer by Oswick and a solo shot by catcher Kyle Pollack.

Liam Royster broke a 4-4 tie in the fourth with a two-run home run for Pingry and Pasculli answered back with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to trim Vianney's deficit to 6-5. After Pingry tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth, the Lancers tied it with three in the bottom of the inning behind RBI singles by Galamb and Ferraioli. Recco also scored in the inning as the back-end of a double-steal.

St. John Vianney advances to play top-seeded St. Augustine Tuesday in the sectional semifinal.

Junior right-hander Nick Coniglio pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts on 64 pitches and senior A.J. Gracia swatted his 10th home run of the season with a solo shot as the Panthers (23-5) beat the Crusaders (6-13) to advance to Tuesday's sectional semifinal round against defending Non-Public B champion Holy Spirit.

Junior Diego Tavarez and senior Charlie Chropuvka each went 2-for-2 with two RBI, with both Tavarez's RBI coming on a two-run double. Junior Glen Cantalupo also went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI, junior Jack Tallent was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI and junior Brett Wehringer finished 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for Ranney.

(3) Bishop Eustace 5, (6) St. Rose 2

Trey Martin and A.J. Lauletta each hit a two-run single for Bishop Eustace and a two-run double by junior Dave Bookbinder in the top of the sixth was all the Purple Roses (7-17) could manufacture in a sectional-quarterfinal loss to the Crusaders (20-7).

Senior Ryan Rogers allowed two runs on one hit and four walks while striking out four over the first four innings before sophomore Jack Tiernan pitched the final two innings and allowed two earned runs on one hit and one walk with one strikeout for St. Rose.
