There is nothing more iconic than spending a day, an afternoon, or a night on one of New Jersey's legendary boardwalks.

In my opinion, the best time to take a stroll down the boards is during local summer, the time between Labor Day and Christopher Colombus Day. It's still gorgeous beach weather, but the tourists are nowhere to be found.

One boardwalk in particular in the Garden State is being hailed as one of the most historic boardwalks in the country, if not the world and it has a pretty interesting history.

First opened to the public in 1870, the boardwalk was originally created in order to prevent sand from getting tracked into the lobbies of the very new and very fancy hotels that lined the beach at the time.

If you ask me, sand in the lobby is just a work place hazard when you live at the shore but that's just me.

Over the years, this historic boardwalk has gone through lots of changes to stay relevant with the times, but it took its current form in the early 1900s.

According to Love Travel, the Atlantic City Boardwalk is one of the most historic boardwalks in the entire country, if not the entire world.

The boardwalk has stayed current over the years thanks to the addition of major hotels and casinos in the 1970s and its status as one of the few free beaches along the East Coast.

If casinos and shows aren't your thing, you can also enjoy Atlantic City's Steel Pier, which features tons of great rides, games, and boardwalk food that you won't want to miss.

If you're not a fan of the Atlantic City boardwalk, then what is your favorite boardwalk in the Garden State?
