The Lakewood public school district introduced Peanut the pony last week as part of a program that will provide therapy to special education students in the town.

The APP article gets into how people are annoyed at this, since the school will pay $45/hour to have the horse, while schools in Toms River are cutting staff due to budget restraints.

The debate about taxes and education and teacher salaries and school budgets is way too heavy to get into here. I have plenty of friends who are teachers so I see where they're coming from, and I also understand people that don't have kids get mad when their taxes go to stuff like therapy ponies.

A pony just seems like a very superfluous therapy animal, when it would be much cheaper, easier (and likely cleaner) to have a therapy dog or hamster or fish. What do you think?
