12 Days Later: Living The Ketosis Lifestyle
High Blood Sugar? Well, 12 days into the Keto Lifestyle and things seemed to be going well. My cravings for carbs are pretty much gone at this point, and I'm eating one meal with a snack later on in the day. I stop all eating by 7:00 PM, and won't eat again until the following day, sometime in the afternoon. This is called intermittent fasting and is key to staying in Ketosis.
Another important step to staying in Ketosis is blood sugar, aka glucose. There is a formula that you can use measuring Ktos and blood sugar, but that takes a glucose and Keto monitor. I currently only have a glucose monitor. I make sure my sugar level is below 90, and that I am in constant Ketosis by using the urine strips. This has been working well, until 2 days ago. That’s when my blood sugar spiked. I was getting readings over 100, which is not good. Since I'm only eating fat, protein and less than 20 grams of carbs a day, this shouldn’t be happening. Today, I finally realized what went wrong. My glucose monitor is off. The FDA approves a +/- ratio of 20%! So if my meter reads 100, my blood sugar can be 120 or 80! How can that help you? It can’t. It's only a guideline, and all I can do is go with my gut and my food consumption.
This morning my fasting blood sugar was 96. I’ll take it. To date, I am down 16 pounds and am sleeping better than ever. Moral of the story? Stop worrying and just do! Until next week. Rock on, party people!
