Fatal Crash on Route 47 in Rio Grande

A Cape May County man who was riding an e-bike was killed in an accident Monday night.

Police Investigation

The Middle Township Police Department says they were called to the area of Route 47 and School Lane in Rio Grande around 8:50 PM.

According to authorities, a preliminary investigation determined that 57-year-old Albert MacFarlane of Rio Grande was traveling southbound on Route 47 South on an e-bike when a Ford Bronco attempted to turn left onto School Lane, crossing MacFarlane's path, causing a collision.

The impact caused MacFarlane to be ejected from the e-bike. He was then struck by a Hyundai Veloster, which was also traveling southbound on Route 47.

MacFarlane was taken to Cooper Cape Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The drivers of the other two vehicles that were involved were not hurt.

Route 47 South was closed for about three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

Investigation Continues

This incident remains under investigation by the Middle Township Major Crimes Unit and the Middle Township Crash Investigation Unit.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Rio Grande Fire Department, Cape May County Fire Police, the New Jersey Department of Transportation, and AtlantiCare Emergency Medical Services.
