As the calendar page turned from October 31st to November 1st, the NJ gas tax made the dreaded 23-cent jump. Just like that, every single commuter in the state will be bent over, raising our gas tax from the 2nd-lowest in the country to the 6th-highest.

When you head to the polls next Tuesday, don't forget to check and see exactly which politicians voted FOR this tax increase, and keep that in mind when you make your choice.

I filled up my tank at the Wawa on Route 37 yesterday, and the attendant handed me a note.

If you couldn't read that note, here's what it said:

  • Effective November 1st, NJ increased the gas tax by 23 cents a gallon
  • Wawa, like every other fuel retailer, is required to add this tax, in accordance with New Jersey state laws
  • NJ does not permit retailers to sell fuel below cost or change prices more than once a day
  • As always, Wawa will continue to deliver on our brand promise of service, quality, and value

There it is, clear as crystal, a massive jump from one day to the next. Jersey might've sucked for a lot of reasons, but at least we had reasonably-priced gas. Now that's gone; good job, government. It can't hurt to keep signing the petition, can it?
