Today is Presidents’ Day, a day to celebrate all U.S. Presidents. Originally declared to celebrate President Washington’s Birthday as the first U.S. President. Later President Lincoln’s birthday was added and now today in general it’s used as a way to observe all of those who have resided in the White House. To date 46 President’s have been elected here in the United States, George Washington the first.

Did you know that six U.S. President’s have vacationed here in the Garden State. Let’s take a trip through time and look at the Presidents who have and even some right here at the Jersey Shore.

President Ulysses S. Grant vacationed here in New Jersey, in fact right here at the Jersey Shore in Monmouth County. President Grant had a beautiful family cottage in Long Branch circa 1869. According to northjersey.com  rumor has it Monmouth Park was built for President Grant’s amusement ..... glad they did it’s still a beautiful landmark here at the Shore.

President James A Garfield spent time in New Jersey after being shot, yes doctors felt the cooler temps at the beach in Long Branch would be better for the ailing President. Garfield moved into a cottage that was donated by residents in Elberon. President Garfield died at the Jersey Shore September 19, 1881.

President Benjamin Harrison vacationed in New Jersey in 1891 in Cape May.

This is very interesting. President Richard Nixon vacationed in North Jersey (Saddle River/Park Ridge) and the Nixon’s rented a summer home on Long Beach Island in Loveladies! I wondered if they rented on “Loveladies Lane” remember? The most romantic street in Ocean County. One story (north Jersey.com) mentioned how President Nixon stopped at the Burger King on Route 72 in Manahawkin in 86’ and it produced a large crowd. Nixon signed autographs. By the way that Burger King, which I ate at numerous times, recently closed :(

President Woodrow Wilson and his wife, Edith, vacationed in West Long Branch and Asbury Park in 1916. Wilson also used a building at Monmouth University while seeking re-election. Wilson, Democrat, did win re-election and served until 1921.

Most recently President Donald Trump spent a lot of time in New Jersey during his Presidency. President Trump spent most of his time in New Jersey at his Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.

As a side note, twice I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the White House Press Corp and cover Presidential visits to New Jersey. First covering President Bill Clinton’s visit to Edison, February 16th, 1994. The second was at President Donald Trump’s visit to Wildwood.....January 28th, 2020.
