A preliminary investigation to this point has led the AG's office to learn that a uniformed Atlantic City Police Officer was on their way to a call for service with no lights or sirens activated heading northbound on Arkansas Avenue on June 18 around 8:30 pm crossing near Arctic Avenue.

Everett Stern, 63, of Atlantic City was heading east on Arctic Avenue at that time and his bicycle then hit the driver side of the police vehicle.

The officer called for help from emergency medical personnel and began providing on scene aid to Stern who had suffered critical injuries.

First responders took Stern via ambulance to Atlanticare Regional Medical Center where he passed away on June 25.

The investigation is ongoing into the accident.

This investigation is being conducted pursuant to Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which implements the statutory requirement that the Attorney General’s Office conduct the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody, and which establishes clear standards and procedures for conducting such investigations," The AG's office said in a statement.
