(12) Freehold Twp. 7, (21) Toms River South 6 (9 Innings)

Sophomore Ryan Costello crushed a game-winning, solo home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Patriots walked off with an extra-inning win over the Indians.

Costello came on to pitch at the start of the eighth inning and fired two scoreless frames before stepping to the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth. After taking ball one, the left-handed-swinging sophomore unloaded on a fastball and launched it over the rightfield fence to set off a game-winning celebration.

Toms River South rallied from a 6-3 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh inning, with senior Jake Wilber slamming a game-tying RBI double to the fence in left after the first two runs of the inning scored on wild pitches.

Junior Justin Diaz singled into center and Wilber made a bid to score the go-ahead run, but Freehold Township senior centerfielder Giacomo Calamita threw him out at the plate by a several steps.

Toms River South took the first lead of the game when junior Ryan Schmidt ended a 12-pitch at-bat with an RBI double to the fence in right in the top of the second, but Freehold Township responded with three in the bottom of the inning to surge ahead. Junior catcher Ryan Kopf drove in the first of his two RBI with an RBI single and senior Jayme Montanez punched a two-run single to right-center for a 3-1 Patriots lead.

Toms River South senior Aidan Folsom led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run and junior Chris Clark cut the deficit to one later in the inning with an RBI single.

As it did in scoring its fourth run in the third, Freehold Township took advantage of a Toms River South defensive miscue to score a run in the fourth, making the score 5-3. The Patriots extended the lead to 5-3 in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Mike Avino.
