7 Questions For USA Baseball’s Todd Frazier As He Goes For The Gold
The U.S. is one of six countries that will vie for a gold medal when the baseball competition begins at the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan at the end of this month. The roster includes a combination of AA & AAA minor leaguers, those playing in the Japanese pro league and veteran major league free agents like Toms River’s TODD FRAZIER.
Team USA won all four of their games to take the Baseball Americas qualifier in early June and will join host Japan, South Korea, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Israel in the 10-day competition that begins on July 28th with the American squad to open against Israel on Friday, July 30 (6am) and then face Korea the next day.
Frazier started this season with the Pittsburgh Pirates and after being released he immediately accepted an invitation to join the US team as their starting third baseman. In the final game of the qualifying tournament in Florida he went 4-4 with a home run and two RBI. Since coming back to Toms River he caught on with the Sussex County Miners who play in the independent Frontier League. He played in six games where in 21 at-bats he had three doubles, a homer and 6 RBI.
Now the 35-year old former Toms River South and Rutgers standout who spent parts of 11 seasons in the majors leaves for Cary, North Carolina on Friday where he’ll join is teammates at the USA National Training Complex for a couple of exhibition games against college players before flying to Japan on July 21st.
