I'm not really big into "fitness" or "working out" or "exercise"...but I'll be honest, a place like this brand new Fitness Court at Veterans Park in Toms River is the sort of thing that might get me interested in being physically fit.

Yesterday, Mayor Maurice Hill, along with members of the Township Council, Toms River Police Department, and Recreation & Engineering Departments officially cut the ribbon to open the brand new outdoor Fitness Court at Veterans Park.

Toms River worked with the National Fitness Campaign to design a state-of-the-art outdoor gym, complete with pull-up bars, gymnastic rings, jump boxes, and more equipment that can be used for bodyweight exercises.

I will admit, I'm one of those people that thinks gyms are a combination of intimidating and a waste of money. I don't want to be the guy in the gym doing my basic workout while some meathead screams in the corner, and I also don't want to be paying my monthly dues if I can't always make it. Having a public area like this, where I could stop by whenever I wanted, and not deal with bodybuilders, seems awesome.

Councilwoman Laurie Huryk pointed out how this will even help those who usually go to the gym, but are unable due to pandemic restrictions:

During the pandemic, when residents have limited or no access to their regular gyms, it is particularly important that we continue to support health and wellness by providing outdoor exercise equipment.

Toms River is the third town in New Jersey to open an outdoor Fitness Court. Check out the pictures!
