In 1966, while in Toronto, Neil Young joined The Mynah Birds, led by Ricky James Matthews. The band landed a record deal with Motown, but as their first album was being recorded, James was arrested for being AWOL from the Navy Reserve. After the Mynah Birds disbanded, Young and bass player Bruce Palmer relocated to Los Angeles. Ricky James Matthews went on to become Rick James.
