JACKSON — A late-night drive and an unexpected curve in the road led to the death of a young man, according to the Jackson Township Police Department.

Officers from the Jackson and Manchester Township Police Departments responded to a motor vehicle collision on South Hope Chapel Road on Friday evening at 10:30 pm. The crash turned out to be in the vicinity of the Pine Barren Golf Club further down the road near a bridge.

Investigators determined that a single vehicle, a 1997 Chrysler Sebring, veered off the roadway and crashed into the woods. The car was likely traveling northbound when it failed to “negotiate” a curve, Jackson police said in a statement.

The vehicle struck several trees before coming to a final stop. Due to the extent of the damage, two occupants had to be extracted from the vehicle.

Austin Hunter, 19, of Jackson, who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash, sustained substantial injuries and was transported to the Jersey Shore Regional Trauma Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Hasson Renouf, 23, of Jackson, who was the passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash, also sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital. He is currently listed in stable condition.

The crash investigation is being spearheaded by Officer Kevin Chesney of the Jackson Township Traffic Safety Unit along with assistance from Officers Stephen Cilento, Joseph Pante, and Seargent Richard Bosley.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact officials immediately at 732-928-1111.
