Yes you are reading it correctly. Taxes are due this year on Tuesday April 17th because of the fact that April 15th falls on a weekend. Actually that's not the entire reason. Monday April 16th is Emancipation Day in Washington D.C. Who knew right? I didn't. But Emancipation day IS a holiday in Washington D.C.

So what is Emancipation Day?

Emancipation Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act by President Lincoln in 1862, which freed the slaves in the District of Columbia.

Emancipation Day has been an official public holiday in D.C. since 2005, and it’s been responsible for shifting the 2006 and 2010 tax filing deadlines (in 2007 and 2011, respectively).

Are you bored with this post yet? I understand that might be a possibility. So thanks for reading this far!

But what I really want to know is have you done your taxes, and if so, how have you filed them? Online, with an accountant? What service did you use? Turbo Tax? H & R Block?

What would you recommend to the people who haven't filed yet? Let us know in the comment section below.
