In what has become both an annual tradition in Ocean County and a sobering reminder of what Memorial Day is really about, Southern Regional High School will be unveiling their "Field of Flags" this week.

If you've traveled along Route 9 past Southern Regional High School in the days leading up to Memorial Day in the past, you know how awe inspiring the display is.

A single flag is placed for each and every American service member who has lost their life in Iraq and Afghanistan. As of this writing, the number is close to 6,900.

It's a stark reminder what Memorial Day is truly about - memorializing the men and women who have fought and died in the service of our country.

The "Field of Flags" display will begin to take shape this Thursday, with a ceremony to follow on Friday at 10:30am, featuring choir and orchestra presentations, as well as student readings. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
