Jersey Shore Congressman Andy Kim (Ocean & Burlington Counties) joined us in the WOBM Newsroom to discuss a number of key issues affecting the 3rd District he represents as well as the rest of the nation.

As mass shootings and gun violence continue to occur at a startling rate across the nation, the search for ways to curb the epidemic continues in Washington.

Congressman Kim voted on H.R. 8 and H.R. 1112 earlier this year which closes gun safety loopholes to ensure universal background checks.

It specifically "establishes new background check requirements for firearm transfers between private parties and prohibits a firearm transfer between private parties unless a licensed gun dealer, manufacturer, or importer first takes possession of the firearm to conduct a background check."

Kim says these measures a key part of ensuring safety in the community.

"This is something that compels our leadership at the state and federal level and other levels to take these steps," Kim said. "Is this going to solve all of the problems? Absolutely not. Is it an important step forward? Absolutely. We need to be able to show the American people that we can make this type of progress. It's been decades since we've had a major step forward in is and there's ways in which we can respect the 2nd Amendment while we're securing our communities."
