He was the lead vocalist, primary lyricist, and a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

And he would have been 65 years old today, born on January 15, 1948 in Jacksonville, Florida.

From lynyrdskynyrdhistory.com:

"For many people, Ronnie VanZant was Lynyrd Skynyrd."

And the man who said, "I'll never be 30 years old", knew his destiny, because he was killed in a horrific plane crash when he was only 29 years old on October 20, 1977, that also took the lives of bandmates Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, an assistant road manager, the pilot and the co-pilot when they were traveling between shows in Mississippi.

He died far too young, but he left his legacy as well as a band that never quit and then went to heights even he would have been surprised to see.

But I'm sure that that free bird reached heights of his own since he left us.

And yes, Ronnie, you are still remembered.
