Janis Joplin would have turned 69 this week were she still around to rock our world.

One of the Queens of Rock and Roll, not to mention a Master of Soulful Blues, Janis was born on January 19, 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas, where she was taunted by fellow students growing up because of her unconventional style--a rebel, a beatnik poet, a true artist who followed no one and nothing but her own inner voice, and damn I loved that about her.

Of course it was her outer voice that she's most remembered for:  Rolling Stone listed her at #46 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" in 2004 and #28 in its list of  the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time".  And of course the recognition goes on and on.

I've always loved listening to Janis pour her raw, bleeding emotion into every note, but it's in actually watching her perform, like in this clip, that her true power comes shining through.  Did the disembodied Spirits of Desire, Anguish, Pain and Passion get together and collectively inhabit her very soul?

Seems like it to me.

What do you think of her?  Comments welcome below.
