Powerball Jackpot Can Solve Poverty?
There's a meme making the rounds showing how Wednesday night's $1.4 BILLION Powerball jackpot can solve poverty.
Let's see if you can figure out the problem...
It reads:
Powerball 1.3 Billion
÷ U.S. Pop 300 MillionEveryone receives 4.33 mil
Poverty Solved!!
-Philipe Andolini
Now, I don't know who Philipe Andolini is, or more importantly, where he went to school, but unfortunately, that math is all kinds of wrong.
You see, when you divide 1.3 billion (1,300,000,000) by 300 million (300,000,000), you have to remember that that word million actually means something and can't just be moved around all willy-nilly.
So while 1,300,000,000 divided by 300 does equal 4.33 million, that's not what's happening here.
The actual math would be 1,300,000,000/300,000,000 = 4.33
So...every person in the U.S. would get $4.33. Four dollars and thirty-three cents. So much for solving poverty.
