The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and Vehicular Homicide Unit along with sixty-seven local law enforcement officers conducted multi-jurisdictional impaired driving prevention patrols across several towns during the month of December with impressive results.

In Ocean County last month with these patrols in place, there were 639 motor vehicle stops, 198 summonses issued, 4 DUI arrests were made, 7 fugitives were apprehended including one federal fugitive, 7 suspended drivers were arrested and there were also 2 drug arrests.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit and Vehicular Homicide Unit, conducted sixteen multi-jurisdictional Impaired Driving Prevention Patrols in Barnegat Township, Berkeley Township, Brick Township, Jackson Township, Lacey Township, Lakewood Township, Little Egg Harbor Township, Ocean Township, Borough of Point Pleasant Beach, Borough of Seaside Heights, Borough of South Toms River, Stafford Township and Toms River Township.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said that nationally, alcohol impaired fatalities make up more than one quarter of all crash fatalities.

This number is especially high during the week between Christmas and New Year. December 2019 was National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.

“I would like to acknowledge the leadership of Captain Joseph Mitchell, Lt. Carlos Trujillo-Tovar and Sgt. John Steinhauer of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit and Vehicular Homicide Unit for coordinating these enforcement patrols," Prosecutor Billhimer said. "I am proud to report that Ocean County did not have a single fatal Driving Under the Influence crash during the month of December 2019. This is due in large part to the collaborative efforts of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Vehicular Homicide Unit and all participating local police departments."
