A pair of fires on Tuesday afternoon was safely put out and both appear accidental, although one remains under investigation.

Lacey Police said that officers responded to the 800 block of Spar Drive in the Forked River section around 1:43 pm along with the Forked River Fire Department, Lanoka Harbor Fire Department, and Lacey Township EMS, all to see that the back deck and back of the home was up in flames.

There was only one person in the home and they were able to get out without any injuries.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before it spread past the back wall of the residence and caused any additional or significant damage.

The Lacey Township Building Department seemed the structure habitable as "the integrity of the structure was not compromised", police said.

The Ocean County Fire Marshal and Lacey Police Detectives are investigating the cause of the fire, although as of right now, it appears to have been set by a cigarette.

Then, at 3:07 pm, Lacey Police responded to the Heritage Village Apartments at Seabreeze on North Newark Avenue in the Forked River section after getting a call that smoke was coming from a first-floor apartment.

Nobody was inside the apartment, but Lacey Township School Transportation later responded to provide temporary shelter for residents who were dislocated as a result of the fire.

Police said the smoke was emanating from the apartment due to the contents of a cast iron pot being left on top of a stove.

The Forked River Fire Department was able to clear the smoke and Lacey Police said that FRFD determined that the building was safe for the residents to return. The Lanoka Harbor Fire Department and Bayville Fire Department were also on the scene.

The Ocean County Fire Marshall and Lacey Police Detectives were on scene as well and they determined the smoke incident was accidental.

A Lacey Police Officer suffered smoke inhalation during the incident and was transported to Community Medical Center by Lacey Township EMS.
