NJ Reaches Deal On Marijuana Legalization
Governor Phil Murphy, Senate President Steve Sweeney, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Senator Nicholas Scutari announced on Tuesday legislation to legalize adult-use marijuana in New Jersey.
According to Patch, the final vote is likely to happen on Monday, May 25 and be signed into law that week. However, as the regulatory process needs to be worked out, marijuana sales won't start for 6-12 months.
Part of the bill also offers expungement to those convicted of low-level marijuana offenses.
This all sounds great, until you read the finer print that includes an excise tax of $42 per ounce, which will still make it cheaper to just buy it from your friend rather than go to a dispensary.
