New York man sentenced for raping housekeeper at Bally’s Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ
A New York man who was convicted in April of raping a housekeeper at Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City in 2018, has now received his prison sentence.
The news of the sentencing was announced by the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
The ACPO said that 36-year-old Jamel Carlton of Saugerties, New York has been sentenced to 42-years in New Jersey State Prison following a two week trial and subsequent conviction by an Atlantic County jury.
Carlton was ultimately convicted on "Count 1 – Aggravated Sex Assault – 1st degree Count 2 – Sexual Assault – 2nd degree Count 3 – Burglary - 2nd degree Count 4 – Aggravated Assault – 3d degree Count 5 – Criminal Restraint – 3rd degree."
Along with spending the next 42-years in prison, Carlton will have to serve 85-percent of that sentence before being eligible for parole, and will have to register as a sex offender under Megan's Law and be under Parole Supervision for Life, as well as having no contact with the victim ever again as part of a sex offender restraining order, according to the ACPO.
The ACPO said that the victim and her family were at the sentencing.
"The victim told the Court and the defendant how much pain his actions have caused her and her family. She asked the Court to impose a lengthy sentence."
“The strength of the victim in this case was extraordinary. Ordinarily the defendant would face 10-20 years in State prison for aggravated sexual assault. However, given the defendant’s criminal history and the particularly egregious nature of this sexual assault we asked the Court to impose an extended term of sentence to secure proper justice for our victim and to protect the public from future harm from this individual. We are grateful Judge D’Arcy viewed the facts and circumstances of this case similarly and imposed this extended term” Chief Assistant Prosecutor John Flammer who tried the case with co-counsel Chief Assistant Prosecutor Erika Halayko, said in a written statement.
