A box of crayons and a coloring book are the new way Monmouth County elementary school students are discovering more about their community.

The Coloring Book Tour of Monmouth County,” offers an illustrated look at County government and highlights some of what is offered throughout Monmouth County.

The Tour begins with a page dedicated to Monmouth County Government, the Board of Chosen Freeholders and the four Constitutional Officers.

"The book gives all the functions of government from who the constitutional officers are and the freeholders and then it goes to the four regions of the county and isolates a town in each one of those regions, Red Bank, Freehold, Asbury Park and Manasquan," Freeholder Director Tom Arnone explained to WOBM News. "Then it talks about some of the county functions whether it's public works, the parks, libraries and any historical parts of the county that are there."

As students color they go on a road trip with a family to explore different parts of Monmouth County.

"As you open up the book you look like you're getting into your car with the family and driving through Monmouth County and then leaving it on the last page of the book," Arnone said.

Freeholder Director Arnone recently presented the coloring book at three elementary schools, Swimming River Elementary School in Tinton Falls, Barack Obama Elementary School in Asbury Park and Wayside Elementary School in Ocean Township, where he explained how the book was created, what it features and then more than 400 copies of the coloring book were distributed to students.

"Our youth is our future and they should know that they're living in a great county but more importantly a county that has a lot to offer," Arnone said.

This book allows young students to learn new things about the community they're growing up in without having to leave their classroom.

"Without jumping on a bus and going on a field trip, they can actually just take the approach of coloring their way through the county," Arnone said.

The coloring book was hand illustrated by Graphic Artist Anthony DeSeno who works in the Monmouth County Department of Public Information and Tourism.
