It appears that cops in Middle Township have had their hands full recently, including a case of a person being shot with a nail gun, another whacked with a 2X4, and another case of a man being chased by a car full of people.

All told, two people have been charged with attempted murder and four others are facing aggravated assault and other charges.

In the first case, Middle Township cops responded to Cape Regional Medical Center on Thursday, April 15th, after they received word that a man had been shot in the chest with a nail gun. The victim, 58-year-old Thomas Stansbury of Villas, was later taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City for further treatment.

During the course of this investigation, cops say the accused, 44-year-old Stephen Calfine of Villas, intentionally shot Stansbury in the chest while they were on a jobsite in Burleigh. Officials say he also attempted to push Stansbury* off of the second story of a building that they were working on.

*Editor's note: in our original report, we accidentally wrote that Calfine was almost pushed off of the building when it should have said Stansbury. We apologize for the error.

Calfine was arrested and charged with attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Facility. Stansbury was discharged from the hospital after being treated.

The next incident happened Thursday morning, April 22nd, when, according to police, 27-year-old Zackea Parker of Egg Harbor City called 9-1-1 and said he was being chased and assaulted by people in a red Subaru in the area of Routes 9 and 147. Responding officers found a vehicle matching that description on New Jersey Avenue in Burleigh with four people inside. The four, 19-year-old Christopher Diantonio of Wildwood, 24-year-old David Flanders of Del Haven, 27-year-old Josue Montalvo from Wildwood, and 21-year-old Daekwon Summers of Atlantic City, were arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, and hindering. All four were lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Facility.

Lastly, this past Saturday morning, Middle Township cops responded to the Village Shoppes in Rio Grande for a report of a person who had been hit with a wooden two-by-four which had a nail protruding from the end. Cops say the victim, 49-year-old Calvin Billingsly, had a "large laceration to the head" but refused treatment.

During the course of their investigation, it was learned that the accused, 19-year-old Michael Rugg of Rio Grande, engaged in an argument with Billingsly and then hit him with the 2X4. A bystander stepped-in and managed to keep the incident from further escalating.

Rugg was arrested and charged with attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, two counts of third-degree aggravated assault, fourth-degree aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, terroristic threats, and resisting arrest. Rugg was lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Facility.

Officials remind everyone that charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless they are proven guilty.
