Matawan High School and NFL Alumni Charlie Rogers released from custody

Former Matawan High School football standout John E. "Charlie" Rogers Jr., 42, has been released from custody under set provisions two days after turning himself into Aberdeen Police on charges related to an October incident where he allegedly threatened someone and their family with a sword.

It's been a fall from grace for the former Husky who went on to star at Georgia Tech and play five seasons in the NFL with the Seahawks, Bills, Texans and Dolphins who on Monday turned himself into Abderdeen Police who charged Rogers with making terroristic threats, stalking and weapons offenses.

The charges stem from an October 5 incident where Rogers repeatedly threatened to kill a man and his children with a sword in his possession at Matawan Middle School in the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen during a verbal altercation at a youth event, according to arrest and court documents obtained by WOBM News.

Rogers allegedly had gone into his truck to grab the weapon during the argument and came back, "with the purpose to put him (the victim) in imminent fear of death under circumstances reasonably causing said victim to believe the immediacy of the threat and the likelihood that it would be carried out."

Police were able collect evidence in their investigation in talking to eyewitnesses and collect electronic/surveillance data.

Investigators said Rogers also appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the offense.

A member of the public provided information to a 9-1-1 call center or dispatcher at the time of the incident.

A warrant was then put out along with the report for Rogers' arrest on charges he knowingly possessed a weapon with the purpose to use it unlawfully against the person or property of another, specifically by the defendant possessing the sword for an unlawful purpose with the intent to use it in an unlawful manner, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4D which is a 3rd Degree Crime.

He also knowingly possessed the weapon "under circumstances not manifestly appropriate for lawful use," which violated N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5D and is a 4th Degree Crime.

Rogers repeatedly threatening the man with a sword violated N.J.S.A. 2C:12-10B which is a 4th Degree Crime.

He made his first appearance in court on Tuesday and has been released under a set of provisions, Monmouth County Prosecutors Office Spokesman Chris Swendeman tells WOBM News Wednesday.

Those provisions are:

• Monthly reporting.
• No return to the scene or Matawan Middle School.
• No dangerous weapons.
• No contact with the victim.

His next appearance in court has not yet been scheduled.

Rogers was fired by Saint John Vianney High School earlier this year for leaving a vulgar infused voicemail on the phone of an 11-year old football parent, Chris Schuster,whose son left the Matawan AYF program to play for Saint Bart’s in East Brunswick.

He was also sued back in 2003 by an Old Bridge Police Officer who was injured while Rogers resisted arrest in a strip club parking lot.

His sister meanwhile, Raven B. Rogers, 36, of Cliffwood, is also facing charges tied to the a separate October 2018 incident.

Raven allegedly got into an altercation on October 14 with the victim who was threatened by her brother's sword just several days prior.

She allegedly used her Facebook account to post a photograph of the victim and requested that, "fellow users provide personal information pertaining to same, to WIT and victim's address."

Raven then began a text conversation with the victim on Facebook Messenger and used "offensive and aggressive language" toward the victim via social media.

She's scheduled to appear in court on January 2, 2019 at 9:00 am following charges in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:33-4A.
