Local Shore Road Races in June
Story by Bozz
Greetings runners and walkers!! ’Tis the season to be taking part in road races at the Jersey Shore. As you might be able to tell from my previous blogs, I enjoy running road races very much. And so does Bradley James, our Digital Managing Editor who posts my blogs each week at 1057thehawk.com. In fact, he finished his 1st ever Spring Lake Five Mile Run last Saturday in 46:37. Way to go, Brad!!
Anyway, I did a little research and came up with a whole slew of local road races for the month of June. Among them are the following:
Saturday, June 3:
Run To Remember John 5K Race- Seaside Park
A fun local race for a tremendous foundation. I personally ran this race last year. The 6th Annual Sgt. John A. Lyons Run to Remember is a 5k & 1-mile Fun Run in honor and memory of hometown hero Sgt. John Lyons of Seaside Park. Proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Foundation & the ORC scholarship fund. Sgt. Lyons was the recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart among several other honors. On October 26, 2011, while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom in the Ghazni province, Afghanistan, Sgt. Lyons died of wounds caused by enemy small-arms fire. For all the details on the Run to Remember John races and to register, please go to http://rtrj.org.

Saturday, June 17:
Kevin A. Brue Melanoma Awareness Father’s Day 5K- Point Pleasant
I personally ran this 5K in 2013. Good race for a good cause. Kevin A. Brue was an avid runner, competing in many races and two marathons, finishing every race with pride. He holds the Point Boro High School record for the 800-meter event at 1:58 set in 1988. Kevin was a member of the Melanoma Research Foundation's Running Team "Miles for Melanoma", running the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. in Nov. 2009. He passed away in 2010.

Melanoma awareness has hit home for me in recent years as well. My father, Joseph D. Bozza, passed away in early 2015 after a brief but courageous battle with melanoma. My dad was also a road runner. He ran several road races at the Jersey Shore including the Spring Lake Five, Asbury Park 10K (which later became the George Sheehan Classic), Jersey Shore Half Marathon and Manasquan Turkey Trot (now Manasquan Turkey Run).
St. Anselm’s Hawks Pre-Father’s Day 5K Race/1 Mile Walk- Ocean Twp.
All proceeds from this event will benefit the Youth Athletic Program at the Church of St. Anselm.
