Mark this date down, November 13th, 2020.  Today is the day that a woman did what no woman has done before.  Kim Ng was hired to take the helm as General Manager of the Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball.  That is a first.  It is also believed to be the first time a woman has been hired to run any major professional sports team in North America as a General Manager.  WOW.  And Kim is from New Jersey!

What do we know about Kim? Kim was born on November 17th, 1968, which means she's got a 52nd birthday coming up next week.  Her father was a financial analyst and Mom was a banker.  Her love for baseball originated on the streets of Queens playing stickball.  She was an athlete in high school, playing softball and tennis at Ridgewood High School here in New Jersey.  She got her first full-time job in baseball in 1991 for the Chicago White Sox (boo).  In the late 90s, she started working for the New York Yankees (cheers) as Assistant General Manager for Brian Cashman, one of baseball's best General Managers.  Over the next 20 years, she interviewed and was not hired for many General Manager positions including with the Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Anaheim Angels, and San Francisco Giants.  She was persistent and passionate, setting the stage for today's great news.  Along the way, she did score a few big awards including being one of Adweek's Most Powerful Women in Sports in 2017 and ranking number 5 on Forbes Most Powerful Women in Sports in 2015.  Today she lives in upstate New York, but with her appointment to General Manager of the Miami Marlins, I'd expect a move to the sunshine state.   Congratulations Kim.  Make New Jersey proud, just don't beat our Yankees or Mets!

PS - The Marlins had a great 2020.  They finished 2nd in the NL East, won their first-round playoff series, and their manager, Don Mattingly, was named Manager of the Year.  She's got a team that can do great things!
