A Jackson man who allegedly did 70 mph on West Countyline Road is facing more than just a driving ticket.

A Jackson police officer caught a 2004 Mercury Sable leave the Bennetts Mills Plaza around 8:19 pm and drive thru a red light and down West Countyline Road.

As the officer began to follow the Mercury, he was able to determine that the Mercury was travelling at approximately 70 miles per hour in a posted 40 mph zone.

The officer activated the patrol unit's emergency lights at the intersection of Brewers Bridge Road to conduct a motor vehicle stop but the driver disregarded the officer and traveled around the jug handle and onto Brewers Bridge Road before stopping in the driveway of the funeral home located near the intersection.

Once he stopped, the driver got out of the vehicle and stood near the driver's door before getting back into the car and driving away behind the funeral home.

The officer followed the Mercury again but terminated the pursuit when the driver went over multiple curbs and then into a nearby restaurant parking lot.

Meanwhile, other officers went to the residence of the registered owner of the Mercury to follow up which is when an officer located the Mercury on North Boston Road and attempted to stop it.

When the driver again disregarded the officer, another pursuit began.

The officer pursued the vehicle onto Frank Applegate Road where it came to a stop at the intersection of Bennetts Mills Road.

There were then additional police units who arrived on the scene as the officers began to approach the stopped Mercury at which time the driver accelerated and turned onto Bennetts Mills Road, nearly striking an Officer and causing him to jump out of the way.

The Mercury then turned into the Jackson Baptist Church parking lot and drove to the far end of the lot before finally stopping.

The driver, 45-year old David Asay then exited the vehicle and was taken into custody after a struggle with the officers.

He was charged with eluding, resisting arrest, aggravated assault, driving while intoxicated, driving a vehicle in violation of interlock device order, careless driving, reckless driving, driving while suspended, failure to observe a traffic control device, failure to maintain lane and speeding.

Asay was processed and later lodged in the Ocean County Jail.
