Howell Twp., NJ, Man Admits Intentionally Killing His Pet Cat

A Howell Township man has admitted to intentionally killing his pet cat earlier this year and now potentially faces up to five years in prison.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office says during a court hearing Monday, 29-year-old Christopher Sanchez pleaded guilty to charges of third-degree animal cruelty by unnecessarily or cruelly abusing a living animal resulting in its death and simple assault.

An investigation began on March 31st when members of the Howell Township Police Department were called to a home on an unrelated matter and the body of a cat was found outside the house.

Officials say the cat, named Lilith, had belonged to Sanchez who allegedly killed the animal with a sharp object two days prior.

Sanchez was arrested on the same day as the initial police response. The simple assault charge was filed against him because he physically attacked his roommate shortly after killing the cat.

Sentencing has been scheduled for January 26th. At that time, the State will be recommending a five year prison sentence and an order to permanently bar Sanchez from owning future pets.
